Destinations. Getting from point A to point B. I could drive any car and take a ride to get to wherever I want to be. But I think most of us can agree that a big part of the experience is, well, just that; the experience. We like the new-car smell of the interior, the tunes coming from the stereo, the Slurpee in the cup holder, and the obligatory fast food stop. Not to mention the "Are we there yet?" emanating from the back seat. A road trip is not only about getting to where we want to go. We do like to enjoy the ride.
It's a lot like any great piece of music or an incredible work of art. They involve two essential elements; tension and release. Bad art and cheap music don't command our attention. So we just pass it by instead of being moved emotionally and taken on a journey.
Relationships can be messy and can take lots of twists and turns that aren't always fun. God uses all those ups and downs in our lives. Tension and release shows us something of Himself and something of ourselves and how He relates to us and how we relate to each other in a fallen world. Healthy relationships are like great road trips often full of the unexpected. Where is God taking you?
